REDWOOD CITY, Calif. – December 19, 2017 – According to a recently published report from Dell’Oro Group, the trusted source for market information about the telecommunications, networks, and data center IT industries, Ericsson maintained the top ranking in the Evolved Packet Core (EPC) in 3Q17, and the market is poised for growth in 2018. Huawei held the second spot while Nokia jumped to third as Cisco fell to the fourth rank.
“Ericsson maintains a lead over the closet rival, Huawei,” said Dave Bolan, Senior Analyst at Dell’Oro Group. “Even though the EPC market declined year-over-year in the quarter, both Nokia and Cisco experienced positive revenue growth, as compared to their low results in the year-ago quarter. As we turn towards 2018, we expect EPC revenue to grow in double digits. The standards for Control/User Plane Split has been issued, which enables, for example, the distribution of the User Plane of the PGW for data intensive functions to the network edge. As a result, leading-edge Service Providers have begun moving forward in building out their core towards 4.9G in preparation for 5G. This will enable many new functionalities such as low latency required for connected car or telemedicine,” Bolan added.
Additional highlights from the 3Q17 Wireless Packet Core Quarterly Report:
- The top five vendors (Ericsson, Huawei, Nokia, Cisco, and ZTE — in rank order) accounted for nearly 90 percent of the EPC market.
- The Asia Pacific region continues to be the top EPC market.
- Dell’Oro Group expects to see positive revenue improvement for the EPC market in 4Q17.
