REDWOOD CITY, Calif.—September 3, 2015In a recently published report from Dell’Oro Group, the trusted source for market information about the telecommunications, networks, and data center IT industries, sales of Passive Optical Network (PON) equipment propelled the worldwide Broadband Access market, to a record level of $3.2 billion in the second quarter of 2015, with the bulk of the growth coming from China.
“Demand for PON technology grew at an impressive 16 percent Y/Y in 2Q15. Contrary to the past several quarters, where a large portion of growth came from Service Providers in Europe, demand this quarter was driven by China. In China, Service Providers are shifting from deploying the central office equipment to deploying customer premises equipment which indicates that ‘Fiber To The Home’ services are being rolled out,” said Alam Tamboli, Senior Analyst at Dell’Oro Group. “For example, shipments of PON customer premises equipment have almost doubled Y/Y in 2Q15, while shipments of central office equipment have slowed. Sales to China have grown so much in the quarter that we now estimate that China accounts for roughly two-thirds of worldwide PON demand,” Tamboli added.
The report also reveals how other technologies such as VDSL climbed to all-time record highs in the quarter. Alcatel-Lucent, Huawei, ZyXEL, ADTRAN, Technicolor, and Pace are among the leaders.
