REDWOOD CITY, Calif. – June 9, 2015 –A recently published report from Dell’Oro Group, the trusted source for market information about the telecommunications, networks, and data center information technology (IT) industries, revealed that the overall storage systems market reached $9.4 billion, down 3% Y/Y. External storage systems declined 1% Y/Y on unit growth over 7% Y/Y.
“The architecture of the data center is experiencing rapid changes, which in turn are changing the face of the storage industry. In the report, our research shows high unit growth of Direct Attached Storage and accelerated growth of White Box storage are indications that cloud service providers are adopting a different storage architecture than the one used by enterprises,” explained Chris DePuy, Vice President at Dell’Oro Group. “The largest six external storage systems vendors, who are not participating fully in the cloud trend, experienced 7% Y/Y revenue declines, while all others, which include startups, white box vendors and new entrants grew 33% Y/Y.”
Total capacity shipped in the quarter grew 20% Y/Y. The top six vendors in the overall storage market in 1Q15 were, in share order: EMC, HP, Dell, NetApp, Hitachi and IBM.
