Convergence at the application edge is making traditional market boundaries harder to interpret. CDN providers are adding security and programmable execution. WAAP platforms are expanding beyond traditional WAFs to include API protection and bot and abuse management. ADC platforms increasingly integrate adjacent security functions, while application-edge platforms can support distributed application processing and AI inference.

These adjacencies do not make the underlying markets interchangeable. Separating application delivery, security, resilience, and edge execution helps vendors, service providers, and investors analyze where spending is moving without double-counting bundled capabilities or assuming that every new feature represents a new revenue pool.

AI adds another dimension. Inference can benefit from execution closer to users and application ingress, but AI infrastructure does not automatically qualify as Application Edge Compute. The architecture, operating model, and primary purchase objective remain central to market classification. Customer-vertical segmentation similarly helps distinguish broad market growth from industries where application delivery and application protection requirements are changing most rapidly.
