Dell’Oro Group Launches Coverage of the Set-top Box and Digital Video Recorder Markets

Motorola Extends Lead in Cable while Thomson Remains Leader in Satellite Market

Redwood City, Calif. – June 14, 2007 –Dell’Oro Group, the trusted source for market information about the networking and telecommunications industries, announced today that it has officially launched coverage of the set-top box and digital video recorder (DVR) markets.

“Over the past several years, we have received multiple requests to extend our thorough, rigorous, and consistent market research process to the set-top box market,” said Tam Dell’Oro, President of Dell’Oro Group.  “We are pleased today to initiate coverage on these markets, which complements and enhances our market research of other key segments of the networking and telecommunications industries,” Dell’Oro added.

The report released today indicates that the worldwide set-top box market, which includes revenues from cable, satellite, and IP set-top boxes, grew 44 percent in the first quarter of this year versus the same quarter last year.

“Half of the year-over-year growth in the set-top box market came from sales of cable boxes, which growth was partly a result of cable operators upgrading their set-tops from proprietary security and conditional access set-top boxes to CableCARD-based set-tops in order to meet the FCC mandate that customers be able to access cable services via third-party devices by July 1, 2007,” commented Greg Collins, Vice President at Dell’Oro Group. “Motorola, the leader in the cable set-top box segment, capitalized on this growth by expanding its lead in the first quarter,” added Collins.

The report also reveals that the satellite segment is experiencing a strong shift to set-top boxes with high definition and integrated DVRs, with Thomson leading the vendors in this segment.  In addition, the IP set-top box market more than quadrupled year-over-year, as large service providers in the United States and Western Europe expand their IPTV services.
